Romans Chapter 6

Union with Christ

Shall We Continue in Sin that Grace May Abound- Union with Christ The Switch to Grace

Let's back up and refresh with the last two verses in Chapter 5, verses 20-21, before moving onto Romans 6:1.

'Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.' Romans 5: 20-21

Put a law in place and there will be lawbreakers. The more laws there are, the more laws are broken and the more need for resolution- either condemnation or forgiveness. As long as there is life and there is law, the offenses will continue. In this way, sin reigns through mortality.

But, Grace reigns forever because; 1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:1 How do you get more grace? How does grace continue? How does it abound? Do you sin more? Paul said in, Romans 6:1-2 1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

No, you don't sin more to get more grace. If you are in Christ or have the gift of grace by Jesus Christ, your spirit is dead to sin and you can't live in sin.

Spirit Baptism By Jesus is Rebirth

Romans 6:5-9 Say you are reborn- that means you are baptized unto Jesus, because remember Jesus baptizes with fire and the Holy Ghost. There are many scriptural evidences of it. If you are in Christ in baptism, you are also united with Christ in his death and resurrection. We are united together; as he was crucified; our old self is crucified with him and sin is destroyed. We can say that we are dead to sin with Christ. Death and sin have no more dominion over us because we are alive in Christ who is dead to sin. You are born of the spirit or born again, your spirit walks in newness of life.

Switched to Grace

Romans 6:14-16 Being alive in Christ, your mortal body will not yield to sin. You switched to grace, a new law. The old law is repealed. You are no longer under the old law. You are under grace. Would you sin under grace? You could, but you wouldn't. It's impossible to harbor sin in the new body having discarded the old.

For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. 15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Certainly not! 16Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness? Romans 6:14-16 Berean Study Bible

Romans 6:16 Under grace you yield to obedience; you obey from the heart! Not because of the letter, but because of the spirit. Being freed from sin you could not do otherwise.

Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, because God's seed abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 1 John 3:9

Sin and Righteousness or Flesh and Spirit

Romans 6:19 In the flesh you were free from righteousness. In the spirit you are free from sin.

Romans 6:21-22 Look at the fruit of the two extremes. The fruit of sin vs. the fruit of righteousness. The fruit of sin is 1) shame and 2) death. The fruit of righteousness is 1)holiness and 2)everlasting life.

Wages vs Gifts

Romans 6:23 The fruit of sin is a wage. The fruit of righteousness is a gift. Wages are spent. A gift is received. Sin is a wage. Eternal life is a gift. You spend your life in sin; the wage is death. You spend your life in His righteousness; the gift is everlasting life. Keep in mind from previous studies that the righteous Paul writes about is not your own. But an imputed righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ.
